Upper Mustang trekking is most mysterious and Mystical trekking in Nepal. Lo Manthang is the main town of Upper Mustang zone. Upper Mustang – the Land of Lo (Forbidden Kingdom); is known as Nepal’s cold & dry desert, lying under the Trans Himalayan region/ rain shadow. Upper Mustang is the last enclave of original Tibetan culture. Upper Mustang Trekking Detail itinerary

Day 1Arrival day Kathmandu

Receive you in Kathmandu international airport. Then transfer to hotel by private car. If you have time, just couple of hrs time sightseeing around downtown Thamel.

Day 2 Kathmandu Cultural and Heritages Sightseeing Tour

After breakfast, We start a guided tour to UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Kathmandu. Kathmandu Durbar Square area holds the palaces of the medieval Kings who ruled over the then Kathmandu Kingdom. Pashupatinath houses a sacred lingum, or the phallic symbol of Lord Shiva. The Aryaghat alongside Pashupati and on the banks of the Bagmati River is a famous cremation site for the Hindus. The Buddhists shrine of Boudhanath is one of the largest stupas in the world, and one of the holiest Buddhist pilgrimage and tourist destinations in Kathmandu. The area of Boudhnath is also famous for over 50 Tibetan Gompas or monasteries. Swayambhu meaning the “the self-existent” is popular among the foreigners as Monkey Temple owing to the large number of monkey population residing in the area. Overnight at Kathmandu.

Day 3 Drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara (914m/2989 ft) 6hrs

Pokhara city is located 206 kilometers west of Kathmandu. As you drive out over the Trishuli River, you can see some travelers who are boating / rafting on trisuli river. Marsyandi valley follows gently up through heavily terraced rice fields and small hill towns to the Seti River that takes you directly into Pokhara lake side. Having pleasant weather, Pokhara is tourist’s center where has a full of natural and cultural heritage sites such as lakes, caves, temples of Buddhist and Hindus. You can observe views to the north across the hills and Phewa Tal (Lake) to the white peaks of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. You can also take a flight from Kathmandu to Pokhara instead of six hours long drive.

Day 4 Fly to Jomsom (2,720m) & Trek to Kagbeni village (2,800m/9156ft), 4 hrs

You will be land on District headquarters of Mustang and will start trek to Kagbeni, the starting point of the Upper Mustang, where you can make your eyes busy for The spectacular views of Nilgiri, Dhaulagiri, Tukuche peak and Dhampus. Kagbeni is the most interesting typical Tibetan village and the entry point of the upper Mustang for overnight stop. Stay overnight in Kagbeni village at guest House.

Day 5 Kagbeni – Chele village (3,100m/10,137 ft) 6 hrs

The trail leads up toward the east bank of the Kaligandaki that climbs over many ridges as it heads north and reaches Tangbe Village. The town is labyrinth of narrow alleys amongst white washed house, fields of buckwheat, barley, wheat and apple orchards. The Nilgiri peaks, which dominates the southern skyline of Kagbeni. Continues to loom massively at the foot of the valley. Beyond Tangbe we reach Chhusang Village and crosses the river, continue climbing north up the trail to a huge red chunk of conglomerate that ahs fallen from the cliff above forming a tunnel through which the Kaligandaki follows. The trek now leaves the Kaligandaki valley and climb steeply up a rocky gully to chele at 3030m.

Day 6 Trek to Gheling village (3,570m/11674 ft), 7 hrs

The climb continues along step, treeless, water less terrain, along the side of the spectacular steep canyon to pass and cairn of rock at 3540m. Then the trail makes a long gradual descent to some chortens on a ridge, and then the trail descends further on a pleasant trail to Samar. The Annapurna, still dominated by Nilgiri, is visible far to the south. Climb above Samar to a ridge, then descend into a large gorge and the trail goes into another valley field, crosses a stream and climbs up to a ridge at 3800m. The route climbs sharply up and down over a series of high passes, before the final descend to Geiling. Overnight at guesthouse.

Day 7Trek to Tsarang village (3,560m /11,641 ft), 5 hrs

From Geling, the trail climbs gently to the interesting pass on our trek NYILA and descends below the blue, gray and red cliffs. After crossing a steel bridge of the Tangmar chu (river), we arrive to a MANI (Prayer WALL) perhaps the longest and most spectacular stretch and main wall in Nepal. Climbing over another pass at 3600m the route makes a long gentle descent to Charang. The huge five – story white Dzong and red Gompa is an interesting visit to observe collections of statues and Thankas as well as many large paintings of seated Buddha’s. Overnight at guesthouse.

Day 8 Trek to Lo Manthang village (3,840m/ 12,557 ft), 4 hrs

The trail descends about 100 meters down from Charang, crosses the Charang – Chu and climbs steeply up a rocky trail to a cairn on a ridge and continues to climb. Finally, from a ridge at 3850m. There is a view of the walled city of LO. After a short descent, cross a stream then climb up into the plateau of Lo- Manthang. Overnight at guesthouse.

Day 9 Lo-Manthang rest for excursion.

Another day in Lo -Manthang gives you the chance to explore its many sights; the Tall Champa Lakhang (God house,) the red Thugchen Gompa, Chyodi Gompa and the Raja’s Palace; as well as to gaze at the surrounding panoramic views of the Tibetan Plateau and the Himalaya. Besides Lo-Manthangthere is two other interesting valleys worth visiting. The western valley Tingkhar, the sight of Raja’s summer palace, Kimling and Phuwa as well as the Gompa of Namgyal (The Monastery of Victory) is the newest and most active Gompa in Lo. In the eastern valley lies the village of Chosar, also rich in gompas and the valley is the main trading route to Lhasa.

Day 10 Trek to Dhakmar village (3,520m /11,510 ft) via Ghar Gompa..

This is an opportunity to visit two other villages on your return trek. The trail climbs steadily to the pass marked by a cairn, offering a last glimpse of Lo-Manthang. We cross highest pass this trek and arrive in Ghar Gompa (3920 Meters). This monastery is very old and older than Samye monastery in Tibet, supposed to be built around 730AD. After crossing the pass around 4100 m(13,407 ft) than we decants down to all the way in Dhakmar (3,520m /11,510 ft) and over night is lodge.

Day 11 Trek from Dhakmar – Samar village (3,540m /11,576 ft), 6 hrs.

From Dhakmar the way goes down to until Ghami (3460m/11,314ft) the huge greenery village in Mustang where we can see the ancient monastery and stupas with. You can see the local people houses here like cave. Than after the trail goes uphill until Nyi La pass and descend to Samar through the same route.

Day 12 Trek from Samar – Kagbeni village (2,800m /9156 ft), 5 hrs.

Today, all the way downhill to Chhusang with panoramic red stone cliffs. After Chhusang we will climb little more than arrive in Tangbe village and finally we will be in Kagbeni.

Day 13 Trek to Jomsom Bazzar (2720m /8,894 ft), 4 hrs.

We trek to Jomsom with the valley of Kaligandaki River which is also known as windy valley where every day big wind blowing and overnight in Jomsom. You will explore in Jomsom village.

Day 14 Jomsom to Pokhara by flight. Pokhara city Tours

After morning breakfast we check in the airport to fly back to Pokhara, roughly 30 min dramatic flight to reach Pokhara between gorge of the two huge mountains, Annapurna and Dhaulagiri. On arrival at Pokhara airport, guide will transfer to the lakeside hotel. We make use of the rest afternoon for discovering the beautiful Pokhara valley leisurely. While we walk along the bank of Fewa Lake, a second biggest lake of Nepal, we cannot stop admiring the state of Fish Tail Mountain reflecting in the lake. We can also take a boat around the Fewa Lake or just take a taxi to visit Devi’s fall, Gupteswor Mahadev cave and Tibetan refugee camp. Transfer back to hotel for overnight stay.

Day 15 Fly / or drive to Kathmandu or extend your trip on request.

After breakfast start sightseeing at Pokhara city and afternoon drive or fly (Paying an extra charge) back to Kathmandu. Transfer to hotel for stay overnight.

Equipment checklist

The following listed equipment is suggested and essential for Tea house trekking and camping trekking in the Nepal Himalaya. Make sure that below list as a guideline proposal. Some of the Trekking equipment can be hired or bought in the many adventure shops in Kathmandu.
The following basic equipment check lists should help you with your packing. Please remember that you should always try to keep the weight of your equipment to a minimum. At the start of the trek your packed trek bag should weigh not more than 33 pounds or 15 kg.
