Upper Mustang trekking over Tangbe and Tetang route is most mysterious and Mystical trek of upper mustang in Nepal. Lo Manthang is the major town of Upper Mustang zone. Upper Mustang is recognize as the Land of Lo (Forbidden Kingdom); is known as Nepal’s cold & dry desert, lying under the Trans Himalayan region/ rain shadow. Upper Mustang is the last enclave of original Tibetan culture. Itinerary

Upper Mustang to Muktinath via Tangbe and Tetang routes

Day 1Arrival day Kathmandu

Receive you in Kathmandu international airport. Then transfer to hotel by private car. If you have time, just couple of hrs time sightseeing around downtown Thamel.

Day 2 Kathmandu Cultural and Heritages Sightseeing Tour

After breakfast, We start a guided tour to UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Kathmandu. Kathmandu Durbar Square area holds the palaces of the medieval Kings who ruled over the then Kathmandu Kingdom. Pashupatinath houses a sacred lingum, or the phallic symbol of Lord Shiva. The Aryaghat alongside Pashupati and on the banks of the Bagmati River is a famous cremation site for the Hindus. The Buddhists shrine of Boudhanath is one of the largest stupas in the world, and one of the holiest Buddhist pilgrimage and tourist destinations in Kathmandu. The area of Boudhnath is also famous for over 50 Tibetan Gompas or monasteries. Swayambhu meaning the “the self-existent” is popular among the foreigners as Monkey Temple owing to the large number of monkey population residing in the area. Overnight at Kathmandu.

Day 3 Drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara (914m/2989 ft), 6 hrs

Pokhara city is a piece of paradise and is located 206 kilometers west of Kathmandu. As you drive out for some hours than you can see rafting on trisuli, then follow upstream to its junction with the Marsyangdi River. Marsyandi valley follows gently up through heavily terraced rice fields and small hill towns to the Seti River that takes you directly into Pokhara lake side. Having pleasant weather, you can see an excellent view of Annapurna Himalayan range including holy mount fishtail. Pokhara is tourist’s Hub where has a full of natural and cultural heritage sites such as lakes, caves, temples of Buddhist and Hindus. You can also take a scenic flight from Kathmandu to Pokhara instead of drive.

Day 4 Fly to Jomsom (2,720m) & Trek to Kagbeni village (2,800m/9156ft), 4 hrs

Landing and have breakfast at Jomsom, district headquarters of Mustang and will start trek to Kagbeni, the starting point of the Upper Mustang. Along the journey, you will have an excellent view of Nilgiri, Dhaulagiri, Tukuche peak and Dhampus. Kagbeni is the most interesting typical Tibetan village and the entry point of the upper Mustang for overnight stop. Stay overnight in Kagbeni village at guest House.

Day 5 Kagbeni – Chele village (3,100m/10,137 ft) 6 hrs

The trail leads up toward the east bank of the Kaligandaki that climbs over many ridges as it heads north and reaches Tangbe Village. The town is labyrinth of narrow alleys amongst white washed house, fields of buckwheat, barley, wheat and apple orchards. The Nilgiri peaks, which dominates the southern skyline of Kagbeni. Continues to loom massively at the foot of the valley. Beyond Tangbe we reach Chhusang Village and crosses the river, continue climbing north up the trail to a huge red chunk of conglomerate that ahs fallen from the cliff above forming a tunnel through which the Kaligandaki follows. The trek now leaves the Kaligandaki valley and climb steeply up a rocky gully to chele at 3030m.

Day 6 Trek to Gheling village (3,570m/11674 ft), 7 hrs

The climb continues along step, treeless, water less terrain, along the side of the spectacular steep canyon to pass and cairn of rock at 3540m. Then the trail makes a long gradual descent to some chortens on a ridge, and then the trail descends further on a pleasant trail to Samar. The Annapurna, still dominated by Nilgiri, is visible far to the south. Climb above Samar to a ridge, then descend into a large gorge and the trail goes into another valley field, crosses a stream and climbs up to a ridge at 3800m. The route climbs sharply up and down over a series of high passes, before the final descend to Geiling. Overnight at guesthouse.

Day 7Trek to Tsarang village (3,560m /11,641 ft), 5 hrs

From Geling, the trail climbs gently to the interesting pass on our trek NYILA and descends below the blue, gray and red cliffs. After crossing a steel bridge of the Tangmar chu (river), we arrive to a MANI (Prayer WALL) perhaps the longest and most spectacular stretch and main wall in Nepal. Climbing over another pass at 3600m the route makes a long gentle descent to Charang. The huge five – story white Dzong and red Gompa is an interesting visit to observe collections of statues and Thankas as well as many large paintings of seated Buddha’s. Overnight at guesthouse.

Day 8 Trek to Lo Manthang village (3,840m/ 12,557 ft), 4 hrs

The trail descends about 100 meters down from Charang, crosses the Charang – Chu and climbs steeply up a rocky trail to a cairn on a ridge and continues to climb. Finally, from a ridge at 3850m. There is a view of the walled city of LO. After a short descent, cross a stream then climb up into the plateau of Lo- Manthang. Overnight at guesthouse.

Day 9 Lo-Manthang rest for excursion: Visit Namgyal Gompa and Tingkhar.

Another day in Lo -Manthang gives you the chance to explore its many sights; the Tall Champa Lakhang (God house,) the red Thugchen Gompa, Chyodi Gompa and the Raja’s Palace; as well as to gaze at the surrounding panoramic views of the Tibetan Plateau and the Himalaya. Besides Lo-Manthang there is two other interesting valleys worth visiting. The western valley Tingkhar, the sight of Raja’s summer palace, Kimling and Phuwa as well as the Gompa of Namgyal (The Monastery of Victory) is the newest and most active Gompa in Lo. In the eastern valley lies the village of Chosar, also rich in gompas and the valley is the main trading route to Lhasa. After visiting Namgyal Gompa and Tingkhar return to Lomanthang for stay overnight.

Day 10 Trek to Dhi village (3,410 m/11,151 ft), 7 hours.

From Lo-Manthang the trail walks straight till Dhi pass 4100m and descends down to Dhi village. The trek from Lo Manthang to Muktinath is harder, but more rewarding and interesting than the west side of the valley. Dhi village is one of the best villages of whole Lo-mathang and it seems more prosperous and it is settled in a very suitable place. Overnight at either local basic guesthouse.

Day 11Trek to Tange (3370m /11,020 ft), 6 hours.

From Dhi the trail goes through the river for around 2 hours and crosses a river from Damodar Kunda, one of the sacred lakes, there is no bridge on the river so we need to walk across in bare feet to cross this river. After crossing the river the trail climbs up till high above a pass of 3850m. The trail goes through a grass less, treeless bare hill. After the pass the trail again drops directly to Tangbe village at an elevation of 3370m. Tangbe is a small village of around 30 houses but most of the houses are attached to each other. On the rooftops one can see piles of dry woods, which also reflects the prosperity in their society. Overnight at guesthouse.

Day 12 Trek to Tetang village (3040m /11,249 ft), 6 hours.

The trek again gets back on the ascending mode and continues to climb for the whole morning. The climb slowly turns into an easier walk crosses couple of ridges and then starts to go down gradually in the morning. Towards the end of the day, the descents gets steeper and ends at Tetang. Overnight at either local basic guesthouse.

Day 13 Trek to Muktinath (3700m /12,099 ft), 7 hours.

The trek again continues to ascend to Gyu La (4,077m /13,332 ft). The top of Gyu La offers stunning views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri Ranges. The trail drops to the village of Chyanggur and gradually continues to go downhill to Muktinath. Muktinath is one of the most sacred sites to the Hindu people and attracts thousands of people each year. Overnight at guesthouse.

Day 14 Trek to Jomsom Bazzar (2713m/ 8,872 ft), 6 hours.

The trail goes down hill walking through the nice Jharkot village where one can visit the many attractions such as the Jharkot – Shakyapa monastery, Tibetan herbal medical center and the old fortress of Jharkot which once served as palace. Continuing the trek towards Jomsom one will enjoy the views of the Kaligandaki valley and Kagbeni village. Kagbeni is a gate way to discover Upper mustang or Lo manthang city. We get a round trip of our trek in Ekle Bhatti visiting all the surprises of the human effort in this corner of the World of such an isolation and solitude. Overnight at guesthouse.

Day 15 Jomsom to Pokhara by flight. Pokhara city Tours

After morning breakfast we check in the airport to fly back to Pokhara, roughly 30 min dramatic flight to reach Pokhara between gorge of the two huge mountains, Annapurna and Dhaulagiri. On arrival at Pokhara airport, guide will transfer to the lakeside hotel. We make use of the rest afternoon for discovering the beautiful Pokhara valley leisurely. While we walk along the bank of Fewa Lake, a second biggest lake of Nepal, we cannot stop admiring the state of Fish Tail Mountain reflecting in the lake. We can also take a boat around the Fewa Lake or just take a taxi to visit Devi’s fall, Gupteswor Mahadev cave and Tibetan refugee camp. Transfer back to hotel for overnight stay.

Day 16 Fly / or drive to Kathmandu or extend your trip on request.

After breakfast start sightseeing at Pokhara city and afternoon drive or fly (Paying an extra charge) back to Kathmandu. Transfer to hotel for stay overnight.
